Cancer, breast cancer, widowhood and bereavement enter new lives every day:
- Over 350,000 new cases of cancer were registered in the UK in 2001;
- 211,000 new breast cancer cases are diagnosed in the US every year – one every two and a half minutes;
- In the UK in 2001, 41,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 13,000 died from it;
- 80,000 men and 135,000 women are widowed each year in the UK alone;
- There are 173,000 lone father families in the UK, heading up 10% of single parent families - that’s 3% of all families in the country;
- 56% of lone fathers are in full-time work, but only 21% of lone mothers.
